Introduction

The Safer Schools Partnership Officer for West Oxfordshire is now PC John Payne.

John's role involves building positive relationships between the police and students, regularly engaging with young people so they have their say on important community safety issues.

He also supports and develops activities to address challenging behaviour and reduce crime offences within the school environment.

Recent youth projects include:

  • "Too Wasted" – a DVD package aimed at 11-14 year olds focusing on the health and social impacts of underage drinking.
The film was produced in conjunction with drama students from Carterton Community College and the package includes lesson plans.
  • "Have Your Say" Day – the first young peoples “Have Your Say” Day in Thames Valley was held in Witney in May 2010.
Seventy secondary school students were invited to voice their opinions on community safety issues and come up with ideas to improve their community.
  • School Watch – all schools in the district are signed up to receive crime alerts direct from the police. The scheme covers protection of staff, students, parents and premises. Signs are displayed around the grounds to make visitors aware.
